NRN States Rights Rally "Huge Success"
NRN Director Quoted in AP Article
Saturday January 16th, 2010 on the Capitol Steps in Austin, New Revolution Now and 10 co-sponsoring grassroots organizations from across the state held a State’s Rights rally to call for nullification by the Texas Legislature of all unconstitutional federal legislation. In particular, the call was made to nullify the current healthcare reform bill in a special session called by Governor Perry.
By all accounts it was a smashing success, with participants from around the state, busloads of supporters from Houston and Dallas, the Sons of Liberty motorcycle group, and thousands of other supporters. NRN published a full page ad in the Austin American Statesman on the 14th calling for the special session, and emailed all members of the Texas legislature and the Lt. Governor, to ask their opinion on the issue. Governor Perry was invited to speak and address the question posed.
Following the playing of the bagpipes, Alan Daves delivered the invocation. Speakers at the rally included George Skaggs of NRN: Peggy Venable, Texas State Director of Americans for Prosperity; Adrian Murray, Dallas Entrepreneur; state representative Leo Berman; state representative Wayne Christian; and in an unscheduled visit, state senator Jeff Wentworth made a brief appearance. Keynote speaker John Stacy gave an overview of 10th amendment rights and the path to shrinking the power and reach of the federal government by nullification. Mack Hayes of Houston provided musical entertainment and led the attendees in “The Star Spangled Banner”.
Governor Perry’s office informed NRN that he was not in town at the time of the rally. Attendees at the event were the usual eclectic mix of grassroots citizens, with many candidates and issues represented by signs in the crowd. Although approached by many candidates seeking a platform, NRN declined to allow any candidates for office to speak; only sitting officeholders who could have a meaningful effect on nullification were offered the microphone.
NRN wishes to thank all who attended, the speakers and entertainers who gave of themselves to promote Texas State Rights, and our co-sponsors: Austin Tea Party, Austin Liberty Coalition, Fredericksburg Tea Party, Travis County Precinct 354 Patriots, Ramparts360.com, Erath 9-12 Project, WacoTeaParty.com, Houston Tea Party Patriots, Southeast Texas Tea Party, Burleson Tea Party.
